It’s never too late or too early to invest in you and your future. Whether you’re looking for a steady income or healthy growth, your needs and goals need to be at the centre of your investment plan.
When you work with SSA we help you create an investment strategy that considers which investment account or general investment account (GIA) is best for you and your end goal. We consider your finances holistically, looking at your savings, other investments such as ISAs, investment bonds or property, and your pension to design a tax efficient plan with you to make your money work harder.
General Investment Accounts can contain various types of assets including: Investment Trusts, Government or Corporate Bonds or Company shares both UK and overseas. Whilst any investment account is subject to tax, the amount you can invest is unlimited. GIA’s can be ideal for those who have used up their ISA allowance but have more to invest. There are no limits as to when you can access your money in an investment account.
Our expert advisers can help you navigate the various fund options to ensure your plan aligns with your end goal!
An ISA is a medium to long term investment, which aims to increase the value of the money you invest for growth or income or both. The value of your investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise. You may not get back the amount you invested.

A General Investment Account (GIA) is an account in which you can hold your investments. A General Investment Account can hold the following assets:
- Investment funds
- Shares (both UK and overseas)
- Bonds
- Commercial property
Providers may differ in the assets they offer. Some give you the full range of investment options, while others stick to a more limited menu, often focusing on investment funds. The good news is, there is no limit to how much you can invest in a GIA. However, on the flip side all investment accounts are subject to tax.
It’s important to dovetail your GIA’s into the rest of your financial plan. At Stan Sherlock Associates we ensure you have considered all investment options before investing. You will be invited to regular reviews to make sure your money is on track to achieve your financial goals.
In a word yes. Money made in an investment account is subject to tax. It’s best to consider this option after you have used up your tax free stocks and shares ISA allowance of £20 000 (in the 2024/2025 tax year). Depending on your personal circumstances, you could be liable to capital gains tax, tax on dividends and/or savings tax. A good financial adviser can help you make the most of your tax breaks and advise you on how to split your investments across tax years to make the most of more than one annual exempt amount.
An Investment Account or General Investment Account is generally a medium to long term investment plan. It’s widely recommended that investments should be left in a GIA for a minimum of 5 years. It’s generally used once you have maximised your tax free ISA allowance. It’s a very flexible way to invest as you can contribute on a monthly basis, make lump sum installments, or even adopt a combination of both.
